During my time as an exchange student in Portsmouth, UK, I noticed how my fellow exchange students had each brought a small keepsake to remind them of home. A reverse souvenir, in a way. I became fascinated by the stories behind these objects and what they meant to each person personally.
I invited them to their favourite places in this town they had recently come to know, and asked them to bring these so-called ‘rinevuos’. I photographed their portraits along with their special items and talked to them about their homes and their experiences in Portsmouth. What did they miss from home? Why did they choose these particular objects? What made their chosen spot in Portsmouth so special to them?
I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing these students and getting to know them from this unique angle. Using the skills I gained from the Digital Photography course at the University of Portsmouth, I captured their personalities and designed a beautiful zine for them to take back home – furthering this souvenir-inception.
